San Pedro cactus are one of the fastest growing cactus. Perhaps 3”-12” or more inches of growth per season. The only way to harm a San Pedro is over caring for it; too much water and not enough light. A skinny San Pedro is most likely not getting enough light, or way too much fertilizer.
The San Pedro cactus can be propagated and grown from cuttings. As long as the cutting is 3” - 6”, it can grow. The cutting piece should callus over before planting. This takes three or four days depending on the humidity. The larger plant that is still in the ground will become the “mother “plant and produce “pups” at the cut site. It is best to cut at a slight angle cut so rain water will not puddle on the top.
If a piece were to break off and fall under cover or can not find light, it will send a little, skinny shoot out to find the sun. Then that shoot will plump out and start to turn green.
Note: Black spots are not bad unless the spot turns soft and mushy. If that happens, Cut that part away. If not removed, it will spread and ruin a plant if not taken care of. San Pedro cactus will even attempt to grow and thrive if in a horizontal position. Try laying one on its side. Then watch the pups grow. Happy growing from Cactus Joe’s.
