I bought a fig type of cactus (with spines on it) last fall. I noticed recently that it has these white spots or globs growing on it. They feel sort of pasty and come off easily. Can you please advise me as to what I should do about it, if anything? As always, thank you. Vicki
It’s a common pest to the opuntia family of cacti. It called a cochineal. You can read more about it here courtesy of wikipedia.
You can use several different methods to remove it. 1.) hand pluck those suckers off with tweezers (obviously not our most favorite pastime.) 2.) spray it with some insecticidal soap (mix your own by diluting a small amount of dish soap in water), alternately you could spray with volk oil or neem oil. 3.) If not heavily infested, you could spray it off with a stream of water from the hose. If a single pad is very heavily infested, you can cut the pad off at the joint and toss it out. Happy growing.
I have several san pedros that I got back in April. They are kept indoors and are doing very well, with excellent growth through the summer and starting to slow now that it is getting colder here in NJ. I am wondering if I should use any cactus food for them, I’ve seen some people recommend seaweed based food and others say that it isn’t necessary as long as you repot often enough so the soil is fresh. Just wondering your thoughts cause I loved your store and attitude towards your plants when we visited Vegas last year.
Hi. Thanks for stopping by. You can fertilize once or twice a year with a cactus fertilizer or even Miracle Grow. Just don’t over do it or the plants will grow too rapidly and get “leggy”, much thinner at the top. Better to have slower growth and a uniform shape. Happy growing.
Hi Cactus Joe, I am the guy who goofed up and called you Cactus Jack today. I googled the name and found Cactus Jack was the name Mick Foley wrestled under years ago before the WWF became the WWE. When my son was growing up in Washington State we would go to WWF events and were both big fans of Mick Foley. Sorry for the name mix up. Meant no disrespect. Sometime my brain just doesn’t keep things straight. To many concussions in days gone by. Anyway, we love your place and will certainly continue to bring friends and family to your outfit when they visit us from out of town. Enjoy your day! Mick
Do you sell purple prickly pear cactus ? I live in North Carloina and I have a huge prickly pear cactus that is green. I have been looking for the purple ones to buy but cant find them..
Just a note to you…absolutely THE coolest place I’ve ever seen! We were there in September, moving out in April! Heck with Florida, and your place ROCKS! Thanks for the hospitality…see you soon! :0)
I gave a nice mention and review of Cactus Joe’s at my food and recipe blog! My blog does have a bit to do with Las Vegas tourism and sites to see, but it is a food blog. I added the Cactus Joe’s article that I wrote to the Silverton’s Mermaid restaurant review, because that place is just down the road a piece. The clientele of the Silverton are the kind of people that may like to visit Cactus Joe’s. The pictures of Cactus Joe’s on the article page should draw attention. I’ll write another mention this summer too. I write nice and I do not write negatively. I hope this blog entry brings you more business and fun people. My blog gets over 400 views per day and it is highly rated, so this article will be noticed! Thanks for all the great atmosphere that you create and thanks for allowing me to stroll through your garden paradise. Shawna
I have been coming to your place for about 20 years. I love the place. I buy small cactus and ornamental things and love to visit
the animals. Do you send out emails when you are having a sale? I just got one of your brochures last week when I was there. I didn’t know you had brochures or a website.
Hi,
I’m writing to inquire about pricing for your 6′ size giant saguaro specimens.
I’d like an idea about the cost. We are preparing to landscape.
thanks, cheryl

We have decorative “rainbow” glass pieces and chunks. Typically used for decorative accents in the yard and the home. Take a look at it here :http://www.cactusjoeslasvegas.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/IMG_4054_0795.jpg
